ooking for a dish that feels like a warm hug but still brings a little playful flair to the table? Let us introduce you to Creamy Gypsy Ham Pasta (Risoni )—a rich, dreamy number that’s as comforting as your favorite blanket and as charming as a dinner guest who knows how to make everyone smile. This dish is where creamy meets cozy, and simple ingredients come together to create a meal that’s anything but boring.

At the heart of it all is risoni, also known as orzo—a tiny, rice-shaped pasta that cooks up tender and silky, soaking in every drop of the luxurious cream and milk sauce. It’s the perfect base for this one-pot wonder, giving the dish a risotto-like texture without any of the fuss or constant stirring. If you’re in the mood to switch things up, feel free to play around with other small pasta shapes—macaroni, ditalini, or even tiny shells work beautifully. This recipe is all about flexibility and fun.

Now let’s talk about flavor. The real star here is gypsy ham, known for its gently smoky, slightly spiced character. It brings just the right amount of savory depth to balance the richness of the cream, adding personality to every bite of the Creamy Gypsy Ham Pasta. You can slice it, dice it, or shred it—whatever fits your fork style.

But what’s a good pasta without a rainbow of veggies? We keep it classic with a trio of carrot, celery, and onion—also known as the holy trinity of flavor. These veggies soften into the sauce, adding subtle sweetness and texture. That said, don’t be afraid to go rogue. Toss in peas, corn, zucchini, mushrooms, or spinach if that’s what’s in your fridge. This Creamy Gypsy Ham Pasta dish is like a blank canvas for your vegetable whims.

To bring everything together, a sprinkle of vegetable stock granules adds umami depth, while a dash of white pepper and cracked black pepper adds a gentle warmth. Salt to taste, of course—let your taste buds guide you. And for the grand finale, a generous garnish of fresh basil brings brightness and a whisper of herbal freshness, lifting the whole dish into something special.

Whether you’re cooking for family, friends, or just treating yourself to a cozy solo dinner, this Creamy Gypsy Ham Risoni Pasta is sure to hit the spot. It’s rich but not heavy, flavorful yet simple, and totally customizable to suit your cravings or whatever’s in your pantry. Best of all? It comes together in one pot, with minimal mess and maximum satisfaction.

So grab your spoon, stir up some joy, and let this creamy, playful pasta bring a little extra magic to your mealtime. It’s comfort food—with a twist, a wink, and a whole lot of heart. 🍲💛

Equipment

  • 1 large saucepan with a lid

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 large onion sliced or cubed
  • 2 medium carrots
  • 2 celery stalks leaves included, sliced
  • 250 grams Gypsy Ham cubed
  • 2 cups full cream milk
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 cup heavy cream or pouring cream
  • 2 tsp vegetable stock granules/powder or chicken stock granules/powder
  • ½ tsp coarsely ground black pepper
  • ¼ tsp ground white pepper
  • 1 ¼ tsp fine sea salt or to taste
  • 1 cup orzo pasta or risoni pasta
  • Handful of fresh basil roughly chopped

Instructions

  • Start by preparing all the ingredients because this recipe comes together very quickly.
  • Bring a large saucepan to a medium high heat, add oil, carrots, celery and onions. Sauté for 5-10 minutes or until the onions start turning translucent.
  • Add the Gypsy ham and continue sautéing until the ham and veggies start browning, about 5-10 minutes. Note: continue on a medium high heat, stirring regularly, as you want to get colour on the ingredients but you do not want to overcook them.
  • Add vegetable stock granules, white pepper, black pepper and salt. Stir and add the dry pasta, milk, water and cream. Reduce the heat to a low-medium heat and stir until the pasta has loosened up and isn't sticking to the base. Cover and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Note: If your pasta requires more liquid the add 1/4 cup of water at a time until the pasta is fully cooked or you've reached the desired consistency. Also, feel free to add another 1/2 cup pasta if you'd like. Just make sure to add an additional cup of water and increase the salt.
  • Once the pasta has cooked through, you can add the fresh basil to the pasta and stir or you can use it as a garnish once you've dished up. Enjoooy!
